<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly durable process cartridge that prevents problems such as an image defect even in long term use, and a charging member that enables such a process cartridge. <P>SOLUTION: The charging member comprises a long body energized toward an image carrier and held parallel to the image carrier; gap holding members provided so as to project near both ends of the body and being in contact with the image carrier, and configured to hold the body part with a space left from the surface of the image carrier. One of the face of each of the two gap holding members in the lengthwise direction thereof is a slope part, which slopes at the same angle with respect to the lengthwise direction.
