PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a modified coal excellent in effect of improving hardness of coke and in combustion performance.

SOLUTION: The method for producing a modified coal includes: mixing biomass and non-hydrogen donor solvent; pressurizing and heating the above mixture to generate an undissolved component of biomass and a first liquid phase component in which the soluble component of biomass is dissolved in the non-hydrogen donor solvent; separating the undissolved component and the first liquid phase component; cooling the first liquid phase component to generate and separate a first solid phase component extracting a part of the soluble component of biomass from the solvent and a second liquid phase component as the balance; and separating the solvent from the second liquid phase component to generate a second solid phase component.
