A process for gasifying a solid carbonaceous fuel, e.g. coal or coke, in a slagging producer comprises preheating the gasification agent to at least 1000 DEG C. in a heat exchanger. The agent is oxygen (or oxygen-enriched air) in excess, and steam and/or carbon dioxide. The agent may be heated by the method described in Specification 772,837. The fuel, e.g. pulverized coal, which may be supplemented by gas from a zone of the producer at 1000 DEG C., may be blown into a stream of the heated gasification agent. Slag formers, e.g. metallic ores, may be introduced into the producer, e.g. at the top or via the gasification agent, to provide oxygen for combustion, and iron powder may be introduced. Hydrogen and carbon black may be produced by introducing liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons, which may be preheated into the producer for cracking, and activators, e.g. ZnCl2 or alkali metal salts, may be introduced via the gasification agent to accelerate the reactions. |
