[Also in Division F4] A packing material for biological filters and cooling towers comprises an assembly of vertically arranged tubular structures each comprising a vertical tubular casing containing at least one vertical interior partition affixed thereto. Preferably the structures are formed by extrusion of plastics material, e.g. P.V.C. As shown, rows 22 of tubular structures 21 are separated by plates 23. The partition is in the form of a square-section conduit connected to the tube by radial fins; further fins forming extensions of the conduit sides may be provided; the conduit may be circular in cross section, in which case of the fins may penetrate to its interior. Alternatively the partition may consist of two sets of parallel plates all disposed along the tube, the two sets intersecting mutually at right angles, and one plate at least being diametral. Alternatively there may be a single diametral plate and, on each side of it, mutually perpendicular sets of plates presenting. in plan view, an array of staggered cells. The plates 23 may be omitted, in which case the tubular structures 21 may be juxtaposed in a hexagonal close-packing arrangement. Two or more assemblies of tubular structures may be stacked vertically, adjacent assemblies being separated by a flat horizontal perforated plate.</p> |
