PURPOSE: Reader stop layers are provided to simultaneously process partial layers of a reading element while protecting other layers of the element. CONSTITUTION: Stop layers resist the mechanical polishing of a layered magnetic structure without substantial degradation and substantial yield from the chemical etching of the layered magnetic structure. A non-magnetic/non-conductive substrate(104) connects an air bearing slider with a transducer header(100). A reading element(102) is placed between a bottom shield(106) and a top shield(108). The transducer header includes a coil(116) and a barrier layer(114) between the shields. |
