1,026,497. Winding coils. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 5, 1962 [Dec. 18, 1961], No. 45983/62. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Division H1] A method of making a coil comprises the steps of forming a cavity of substantially the size and shape of the desired coil, randomly laying within said cavity turns of wire and compacting said turns to form a compact randomly wound coil. The cavity is formed by a winding member 24 and a winding cam 26 into which turns are laid by a machine 32. When sufficient turns have been placed in the cavity, the turns 44 are compacted by the ram 46 of a press 45, Fig. 3 (not shown). The member 24 and the cam 26 are removed and the compacted coil, in the mould 20 is placed in an encapsulating machine. The chamber of the machine is evacuated, encapsulating material introduced and heat applied to cure it. Alternatively, the coil may be taped or provided with a supporting form. |
