The invention relates to mass spectrometers in which samples on a moveable support plate 13 are ionized by matrix-assisted laser desorption (MALDI), and provides positional control of laser spots via a system of rotatable mirrors 7 & 8 to relieve strain on the support plate motion drive, which by its nature is not able to follow a sufficiently fast movement from sample to sample for a fast sequence of analyses. If the spot position is finely adjusted by the mirror system and made to follow the movement of the sample support plate 13, then the intermittent movement of the sample support 13 can be replaced with a continuous uniform motion. Galvo-mirrors 7 & 8 with low inertia are preferably used between the beam generator 3 and a Kepler telescope 9 in the housing of the laser. The positional control can also be used for automatic adjustment of MALDI time-of-flight mass spectrometers, at least if the ion-optical elements, such as the reflector 19 and detector 20, are equipped with movement devices. |
