An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) system employs pilot symbols comprising continuous pilot (CP) symbols (120) and scattered pilot (SP) symbols (122) distributed across sub-carrier signals in accordance with respective patterns. For each mode of operation (e.g. 8k, 16k, 32k) a plurality of SP patterns may be used, but only one CP pattern is used which is independent of the SP patterns. The CP pattern used for a particular mode may be derived from a master CP pattern stored at the transmitter or receiver, e.g. the pattern for 8k or 16k modes may be derived from a pattern used for 32k mode. |
