[Also in Division G3] The output voltage of a number of rectifier bridges I, II, III, IV in series, each bridge having two diodes and two controlled rectifiers, is controlled by operating a number of the bridges to give their maximum output and operating one bridge intermittently to give a variable output. Each bridge either conducts or does not conduct for whole half-cycles only. The rectifiers of each bridge are connected as shown so that the uncontrolled valves, such as D7, D8, pass load current when the controlled valves are not conducting. With the manual control K set at position 11 as shown bridges I and II conduct all the time, and bridge III is made conducting for three half-cycles in four. For automatic control of load current, say, the current is monitored at R 1 compared with a reference at G 0 , and the error signal fed to forwards and backwards counters D, Q, which control the static relay units R1 to R4, F1 to F4, and B1 to B4 (which are described with reference to Fig. 4, not shown). Rectifier control signals are produced at A1 to A8 and fed through transformers H1 to H8 to the controlled rectifiers. The invention produces fewer harmonics on the A.C. side than would a phase controlled rectifier. |
