Communication link establishment

A method of establishing a communication link between a network access node and user equipment on at least one common radio channel in a wireless telecommunication network, user equipment operable to perform that method and a computer program product operable to perform that method. The method comprises: receiving a data transmission from the network access node; directly triggering, within user equipment layer one, initiation of a request for establishment of communication with said network access node on said at least one common radio channel; and transmitting said request to said network access node. According to methods described, a UE may be operable to implement methods of establishing communications links which allow early and proactive common EDCH acquisition. Such methods aim to minimise both uplink and downlink service delay, particularly in cases where user equipment is operable to autonomously decide a downlink transmission is likely to cause an uplink transmission from user equipment as a response. Advanced aspects described herein aim to optimising user equipment behaviour by enabling cross-layer interactions.
