PURPOSE: An EGR device for an engine and a controlling method thereof are provided to prevent the reduction of a turbo charger, engine performance, and durability by properly taking follow-up actions after monitoring and determining the abnormality of an emergency filter. CONSTITUTION: An EGR device for an engine comprises a low pressure EGR line(1), a filter case(5), a differential pressure sensor(9), and a controller(11). The low pressure EGR line connects the front side of the compressor of a turbo charger and the rear side of a DPF. The filter case forms a part of the low pressure EGR line. A part of the filter case forms the low pressure EGR line. The other part and both ends of the filter case are connected to a flange(3). The differential pressure sensor measures the pressure difference of both sides of an emergency filter(7) inside the filter case.
