The device has an estimating module estimating distance in a surveillance region based on a possible object pixel of an object in an image (9). A segmenting module segments the object containing the object pixel according to a segmentation strategy. A strategy module is selected from a group consisting of a programmed strategy module, an electronically configured strategy module and a programmed and electronically configured strategy module. The segmentation strategy is adopted for the object depending on the estimated distance. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising program code for carrying out all steps of a method for segmenting an object in an image (2) a method for segmenting an object in an image.
