974,652. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 23, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 15983/63. Heading H1D. In a method of protecting the glass bulb 2 of a cathode-ray tube from implosion, a strengthening layer 8<SP>1</SP> is provided around, and provides a frame for, the display area 3 of the tube. During manufacture, a strengthening layer 8 is placed in a mould 7 slidably engaged with a central member 5 having a seal 6 which masks the display area 3 when hardening fluid is added to layer 8 and the mould is closed. The layer 8 may be reinforced with glass fibres or a braiding of metal wire, and the hardening fluid may be a synthetic material or unset concrete. A metal cup may be placed in the mould initially so as to provide a cover for the reinforced layer. Mounting lugs may be provided in the mould so as to be fixed to the reinforced layer during the moulding process. As shown, the reinforced layer 8<SP>1</SP> adjoins a reinforced synthetic layer 10 initially applied to the tube. Alternatively, the bulb may initially be fitted with a metal cup, the space between cup and bulb being filled with hardening material. Specification 974,651 is referred to. |
