A body 1 fixed to and arranged to lock a vehicle steering column B comprises a lock 2 and intermediate member 5 which when rotated by the key against the pressure of a ball 14 causes a bolt 7 provided with a head 7r to move radially and outwardly of the body towards engagement with a sleeve M on the steering column. In the Fig. 1 position the column is shown unlocked and a reduced neck portion of the bolt 7 engages in a slot in a sleeve 8, which sleeve may in this position be rotated as described in Specification 1,143,963, to make electrical, e.g. ignition circuits. When however the key 17 is turned, an eccentric stud 5a is also turned and lifted so that a spring 9 acting on a finger 7b moves the bolt 7 upwardly to an intermediate position in which the enlarged lower part of the bolt passes through an enlarged portion of the slot in the sleeve 8, Fig. 6b (not shown), and prevents the sleeve from rotating, Figs. 6-10 (not shown), but the steering column remains unlocked as the head 7r does not engage the sleeve M so that the car may be moved (as in a garage) but not started. In this position a ball (11), Fig. 8 (not shown), engages in a recess (7m) in the bolt. In Figs. 11-15 (not shown), further rotation of the member 5 causes the stud 5a temporarily to engage a cam slot in the bolt 7 and lift the bolt higher until the ball (11) engages in a recess (7n), Figs. 13 and 17 (not shown), in which latter figure the ball pushes the bolt 7 upwardly and in this position both the sleeve 8 and the column B are prevented from rotating so that the vehicle may be neither steered nor started. |
