PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expansion molding method for obtaining a foam molded article having high dimensional precision without being influenced by thermal expansion or thermal contraction by temperature change of a device. SOLUTION: In the toggle type mold clamping device (1), a mold clamping force sensor (29) is provided on a tie bar (6), and mold clamping force is monitored in a mold clamping process. When molds (15, 16) touch, the mold clamping force is detected, and the position of a movable platen (8) at that time is used as a reference mold platen position. A molten resin added with a foaming agent is injected to a cavity (C) in the clamped molds (15, 16), and then, the movable platen (8) is driven from the reference mold platen position only for a relative movement amount, and the mold is opened only for the prescribed mold open amount.
