[Also in Division F4] Liquified gas is stored under pressure in an underground chamber 10, Fig. 1, into which the gas is introduced at 30, Fig.2, from a tanker or a liquifying plant (not shown), the gas being pumped into the tank by a pump 31 and passing from the latter through valves 35, 80, 32 and 33 to a tube 21 leading to the bottom of the chamber 10, and when required liquified gas is forced up the tube 21 under the pressure in the chamber 10 and passes to a degassing retort 41 from which the liquid phase passes to a reciprocating pump 44, a heat exchanger 45 and through a duct 46 to a vaporizing plant 47, the gaseous phase leaving the retort 41 passing to a centrifugal blower 50, the heat exchanger 45 and a tube 22 surrounding the tube 21 and leading to the top of the chamber 10. A partial liquifaction of the gaseous phase takes place in the heat exchanger 45 and a by-pass conduit 60 is provided in order to regulate the heat exchanger. The vaporizing plant 47 serves a distributing network (not shown) through a valve 48 and a second lower pressure network through an expansion unit 70 and a pipe 71, and the chamber 10 may be pressurized from the latter network through a compressor at 72. The lower pressure network may be supplied from the chamber 10 through an expansion unit at 72. The liquified gas in the tank may be recycled through the tube 21, valves 33, 32, 36, 34, pump 31, valves 35, 81 and 73 and tube 22. More than one chamber 10 may be provided, the chambers being excavated from one or more pits 14, and the access holes between the pits and the chambers are plugged at 16 and by ice 15. The tubes 21 and 22 servicing each chamber 10 are concentric with an outer tube 23 cemented into the ground, the space between the tubes 22 and 23 insulating the inner tubes 21 and 22 from the ground. Insulating material may be provided on the walls of the chamber 10 and vertical metal plates may be disposed in the latter to promote heat exchange through the liquified gas. |
