A swimming toy comprises a body and head portion, arms and legs, a cross-shaft rotatably mounted on the front side of the body portion, means mounting the arms on the ends of the cross-shaft to extend 180 degrees apart for rotational movement with the cross-shaft at the axis, separate axles mounted for rotational movement on the front side of the body portion in crosswise alignment, means mounting the legs on the opposite end portions of the axles to extend downwardly from the body portion, and driving means in the body portion, an operative connection between the driving means and the cross-shaft for imparting rotational movement thereto, and another operative connection between the driving means and the axles for transmitting rotational movement from the driving means to reciprocating rotational movement of the axles whereby the legs are rocked back and forth with the axles as a pivot. A frame comprising members 24, 26 mounts the cross-shaft 22 carrying the arms 14, 16 at 180 degrees to each other and two axles 50 carrying the legs 18, 20. A driving pinion 32 driven by a spring 28 meshes with a pinion 34 on the cross-shaft to rotate the arms and meshes with a pinion 36 on a cross-shaft 38 to drive a pair of oppositely extending eccentrics 40, 42 having studs for pivotally connecting with links 46 which pivotally connect with rocker plates 48 on the axles 50 to rock the legs. Alternatively, for rocking the legs, the shaft 38 carries crank arms offset in opposite directions and having pins which engage in elongated slots in the links which connect directly with the axles. The feet 70 may pivot on pins 72 extending through an extension on the feet and engaging in a recess in the legs. Rubber washers 60 seal those points of hollow parts at which shafts or axles extend through to the outside. |
