A combined reaping and hay-conditioning machine comprises a main frame 10 from which sub-frames 21, 44 carying the reaping device and conditioner respectively are pivotally suspended, the frames being suspended from a power-lift mechanism 82 through lost-motion linkage which permits the units to float relatively to the ground and causes the conditioner to rise first, during the lifting operation. The reaping mechanism comprises a conventional reciprocating cutter 22 preceding two endless aprons which feed cut crops, laterally to pass through a central passageway into the nip of the conditioning rollers 40, 41 the aprons being driven by jointed shafts 31, 32 (Fig. 4, not shown) which also respectively drive a reel 24 above the cutter and the cutter bar itself, through an oblique crank pin 34 and pitman 34 (Fig. 4, not shown). The hydraulic ram 82 acts on an arm 52 forming part of a quadrilateral linkage 52, 96, 92 connected by a shaft 90 to a similar linkage 51 and ram on the other lateral side of the machine. A rod 59 freely passes through a bush 58 carried by the arm 52 and is pivoted to an arm 64 carrying the sub-frame. A nut 84 on the rod 59 constitutes the lost-motion connection between the reaping mechanism and the lifting device. Floating action is ensured by springs 78 which suspend the arm 64 from a bracket pivoted between a pair of plates 70. The plates 70 are pivoted on the frame at the same point as the arm 52 and normally rest against a stop 81 on the frame 10 but are lifted bodily when the arm 52 rises sufficiently. The hay-conditioner sub-frame 44 is pivoted at its rear to the main frame 10 and is suspended by springs 99 from the lower arms 92 of the quadrilateral linkages; it is therefore raised immediately the linkages are operated. The machine is mounted on two forward wheels 11, driven by an engine and on a rear castor-wheel 14.
