<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid droplet discharge device for securely inspecting a liquid discharge face and a method for maintaining a detection device. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid droplet discharge device includes: an ink jet head 16 having a liquid discharge face with openings of a plurality of nozzles formed thereon; the detection device 70 detecting an abnormality of the liquid discharge face of the ink jet head 16; and a moving means relatively displacing the ink jet head 16 and the detection device. The detection device 70 includes: an imaging means 154 imaging the liquid discharge face; an opening/closing member 150 which is openably/closably interposed between the imaging means 154 and the liquid discharge face 16A; and a reference plate 152 for obtaining a predetermined light receiving amount during imaging by the imaging means 154.
