<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation membrane element improved in separating and removing performance in a separation membrane having unevenness, and excellent in stable performance when operation is carried out under high pressure conditions not only at the beginning but also over a long period of time. <P>SOLUTION: The separation membrane element 1b is formed by winding, around a perforated water collecting pipe 6, an envelope-like membrane 5b formed by laminating and bonding separation membranes 3b each having a height difference of 100 μm or more and 2,000 μm or less on at least one surface.
