<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object type determination device that can reduce an arithmetic load required for type determination of objects and shorten the type determination time. <P>SOLUTION: This device extracts an object region R of the object based on the image captured by an infrared camera 2R to create a luminance profile Jn of a motion determination range P within the object range R (STEP106). The device reads out from a memory a luminance profile Jo created ΔT before the present time to determine whether a difference in the feature quantity between Jn and Jo is equal to or larger than a specified value. When the difference is equal to or larger than the specified value, it is determined that the object is a living matter (e.g., a pedestrian) (STEP110). When the difference is smaller than the specified value, the device reads out from the memory a luminance profile Jh created ΔT/2 before the present time to determine whether a difference in the feature quantity between Jn and Jh is equal to or larger than the specified value. When the difference is equal to or larger than the specified value, it is determined that the object is a living matter.
