<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery, which has a high capacity exceeding 200 mAh/g and high charge/discharge characteristics under high current density conditions, and to provide a nonaqueous secondary battery using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The cathode active material for a nonaqueous secondary battery is a composite oxide cathode active material which has a layered structure and is represented by general formula Li[Li<SB POS="POST">a</SB>Mn<SB POS="POST">b</SB>Me<SB POS="POST">c</SB>]O<SB POS="POST">2-d</SB>(Me includes one or more elements selected from transition metals.) (0<a<1/3, 0<b<2/3, 0<c<1, and 0≤d≤0.2).
