<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting device which is further downsized and which can be stably and reliably mounted on a mounting board. <P>SOLUTION: The light-emitting device comprises: a semiconductor light-emitting element 2; a protection element 18 having a plane area smaller than that of the semiconductor light-emitting element 2; a substrate 1 supporting the semiconductor light-emitting element 2 and the protection element 18; and a through hole 15 penetrating from a face of the substrate 1 for supporting the semiconductor light-emitting element 2 to a rear face of the substrate 1.
