<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform data transmission by a main signal without going through a core network. <P>SOLUTION: An optical communication system is characterized by comprising: (2n+1)(where n is a natural number) base stations; a transmitter T and a receiver R disposed at an upper level of the (2n+1) base stations; and an array waveguide diffraction grating AWG including lower terminals B the number of which is the same as the (2n+1) base stations and each of which is connected to each of the base stations, and upper terminals U the number of which is the same as the (2n+1) base stations, each of n pairs of which is connected with each other and the remaining one is connected with the transmitter T and receiver R. When a data signal is transmitted from one base station to another base station, the data signal will be looped back to the base station side at the array waveguide diffraction grating AWG, and when a data signal is transmitted from one base station to the receiver R, the data signal will be output to the receiver R side at the array waveguide diffraction grating AWG.
