A high-voltage electrical connector comprises mating plug and socket members, the insulating body of the plug member being made of a more flexible material than that of the socket member, and the dimensions of the bodies being such that when the end of the plug member initially engages the bottom of the socket member, there is a clearance between the two bodies. The plug member is subsequently expanded to make full surface to surface contact with the socket wall by screwing nut 22, rotatably attached to the plug member, on to external screw threads 12a on the socket member. As the screw nut is tightened, air and insulating grease are expelled from between the members into a space between threads 22a and the top of the body 28 of the plug member. The preferred angle of taper B of the plug member is 6À5 Œ 0À5 degrees, and that of the socket is 8 Œ 0À5 degrees. The plug and socket members may have a constant taper or a taper which increases progressively as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The socket body may comprise a bushing 12 of fired ceramic or glass secured to a mounting ring 14, and an internal socket body 19 also of ceramic or glass, or the bushing and internal body may be formed integrally. The plug member is of synthetic rubber treated with silicone. For use at relatively low voltages, the socket body and flange may be formed integrally of epoxy resin into which the contact 16 is moulded. In this ease the screw ring 22 may also be of epoxy resin.</p> |
