[Also in Division D1] A composition for rendering cellulosic material flame-retardant comprises a watersoluble tetrakisα-hydroxyorgano)phosphonium halide, a water-soluble cyclic nitrogen-containing compound, a water-soluble tertiary amine, a carbamic acid derivative, a halogenated paraffin and a polyvinyl halide composition in amount not exceeding 25% by weight of the halogenated paraffin. The polyvinyl halide composition is a resin composition which contains a vinyl halide polymer or copolymer, e.g. a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or acrylate ester. The phosphonium halide is of formula wherein R is hydrogen, an alkyl or halogenated alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an alkenyl or halogenated alkenyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an aryl or halogenated aryl group containing 6 to 10 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl or halogenated cycloalkyl group of 3 to 6 carbon atoms and X is Cl, Br, F or I and may be partially polymerized before being dissolved in the water. The cyclic nitrogencontaining compound is a triazine such as a methylol malamine or a derivative thereof, e.g. the trimethyl ether of trimethylol melamine, a triazone such as dimethylol triazone or a cyclic alkylene urea, e.g. dimethylol ethylene urea and dimethylol propylene urea. Carbamic acid derivatives specified are urea, thiourea, biuret, ethyleneurea and dicyandiamide and tertiary amines are triethylamine, tributylamine, trihexylamine, triethanolamine, triisopropanolamine and tripentanolamine. The halogenated paraffin is a halogenated straight or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbon containing 16 to 40 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. a chlorinated paraffin and may be dissolved in a solvent such as toluene, kerosene, xylene, naphthalene, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, methylene chloride or petroleum solvent. In the examples an aqueous polyvinyl chloride dispersion is mixed with tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride, trimethylolmelamine, triethanolamine, urea, antimony oxide and a solution of a chlorinated paraffin in xylene and, optionally, petroleum solvent. An alkylated aryl polyether alcohol emulsifying agent is used. The compositions are used to impregnate cellulosic materials which are then dried and cured (see Division D1).
