Bidirectionally orientated magnetic sheets are formed from an iron alloy containing 2-6% of aluminium and the balance iron incidental ingredients and impurities by a process comprising initially annealing a thick sheet of the alloy at a temperature above the primary recrystallisation temperature, generally above 700 DEG C., warm rolling the sheet at least once in the range 200-500 DEG C and finally annealing in the range 1050-1350 DEG C. Aluminium in the alloy can be replaced by silicon, the total content of aluminium and silicon being 2-6% and the aluminium content being at least 1%. Carbon may be present under 0.08% and sulphur under 0.05%. In an example an alloy plate was annealed in wet hydrogen at 800 DEG C. for 30 minutes, cooled quickly to 300 DEG C., warm rolled twice at 300 DEG C. with an intermediate anneal at 1000 DEG C. in wet hydrogen, maintained at 500 DEG C. for several hours in dry hydrogen and finally annealed at 1100 DEG C. for four hours. |
