<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further reliably read a service label attached to merchandise. <P>SOLUTION: A merchandise information reading apparatus comprises: image capturing means which captures an image picked up by imaging means; first reading means which detects a code symbol BC from the image of merchandise G captured by the image capturing means and reads merchandise information represented in the code symbol; second reading means which detects a service label SL representing a content of service to be applied to the merchandise from the image captured by the image capturing means when the reading by the first reading means is not established, and reads service information corresponding to the service label SL; and third reading means which detects a character string CS from the image captured by the image capturing means when the reading by the second reading means is established, and reads the merchandise information represented in the character string.
