<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid-crystalline medium for an MLC, a TN or an STN display, which does not include disadvantages of the conventional technique or includes only to a reduced extent, and preferably at the same time processes very high specific resistance and a low threshold voltage. <P>SOLUTION: It has now been found that this object is achieved when a compound represented by formula I is used for the liquid-crystalline medium. The compound is distinguished, in particular, by the high clearing point, the low rotational viscosity and the low birefringence thereof.
