<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating fluorescent substance in which the fluorescence property is excellent, and that can maintain the emission characteristic for a long term. <P>SOLUTION: A method of manufacturing a coating fluorescent substance includes a blend process in which a fluorescent substance and a metal alkoxide are mixed in a solvent, and the fluorescent substance is coated with an aluminum oxide formed by an aluminum alkoxide, wherein the fluorescent substance contains a second group element (M), europium (Eu), silicon (Si), and oxygen (O) by the atomic ratio of the following composition formula (1): [(M)<SB POS="POST">1-x</SB>Eu<SB POS="POST">x</SB>]<SB POS="POST">a</SB>Si<SB POS="POST">b</SB>O<SB POS="POST">c</SB>.
