A method for producing a ceramic honeycomb structure which is formed of: a ceramic honeycomb body having a plurality of cells that extend in the axial direction and are formed of porous partition walls having a porosity of 50% or more; and an outer circumferential wall that is formed on the outer circumference of the ceramic honeycomb body. This method for producing a ceramic honeycomb structure is characterized by comprising: a step wherein a molded body having a ceramic honeycomb structure is formed by extruding a ceramic paste; a step wherein a ceramic honeycomb body that has grooves extending in the axial direction on the outer circumferential surface is formed by removing some of partition walls of cells positioned in the outer circumferential portion of the molded body or of a fired body that is obtained by firing the molded body by processing the outer circumferential portion; and a step wherein an outer circumferential wall is formed by applying a colloidal metal oxide to the outer circumferential surface of the ceramic honeycomb body, drying the applied colloidal metal oxide, and then additionally applying a coating material that contains a ceramic aggregate having an average particle diameter of 1 mum or more thereto. |
