In a diesel engine in which pilot injection and main injection are executed, a target spray temperature is set for the end of the physical ignition delay period of fuel injected in the main injection, and the pilot injection quantity and pilot injection timing are controlled such that the reference spray temperature that is the actual spray temperature at the end of the physical ignition delay period matches the target spray temperature. The end of the physical ignition delay period of the fuel is found as a point in time when the in-spray equivalence ratio has dropped to an in-spray combustible equivalence ratio (0.7). The reference spray temperature is found by subtracting the temperature corresponding to a heat quantity found with an initial spray temperature as a reference from the in-cylinder temperature at the end of the physical ignition delay period of the fuel.
