1,055,139. Helical scan record tape systems. AMPEX CORPORATION. Oct. 5, 1965 [June 17, 1965], No. 42154/65. Heading G5R. In a domestic television recorder, the lower drum 18 is fixed, while the upper, carrying the head 21 is rotated against the direction of feed of a magnetic tape 14. Tape moving relatively to the upper drum 19 is air-spaced therefrom by air swept in by the drum between the guides 24, 26 at the tapeexit point. The head 21, while bearing on the tape, Fig. 6, raises a moving " tent " region. At 37 air is sucked in from the clearance gap between the drums and at 39 is trapped and squeezed between the tape and lower drum 18, at 41 to air-space the tape therefrom. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the drum 19, besides the head 21, carries one or more passive tape-contacting members, since the amount of protrusion of the head 21 for good record/playback performance may be insufficient for good air-bearing performance at the lower drum 18. The arrangement may also be applied to 180-degrees wrap systems. The tape is guided into and out of the helical path on to the reels by conical guides (Fig. 1, not shown). |
