Compounds of the formula <FORM:1071318/C2/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing not more than 5 carbon atoms, the symbols alk represent alkylene groups that separate the oxygen atoms by at least 2 carbon atoms and contain not more than 4 carbon atoms and n represents 1 or 2 and preparations thereof by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1071318/C2/2> with 5-nitrofurfural in the presence of a catalyst or condensing agent which splits off the elements of water. Pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions in a form suitable for enteral, parenteral or local administration, which contain a compound of the first general formula above together with specified organic or inorganic, solid or liquid inert pharmaceutical carriers or animal fodder, are active against parasitic worms (e.g. schistosoma), protozoa and bacteria (e.g. staphylococci, salmonella typhi and escherichia coli). 3 - [2-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-vinyl]-6-(3:6:9-trioxadecyloxy)-pyridazin is obtained by heating 3 - methyl - 6 - (3:6:9 - tri - oxadecyloxy)-pyridazine with 5-nitrofurfural in acetic anhydride. |
