<p>A high yield strength steel wire for use in a wire saw with the ratio Rp0.2/Rm no less than 96%. A method and apparatus for drawing high yield strength steel wire comprises drawing wire (13) through a plurality of standard dies (14) followed by a final die (15) arranged in a wire drawing machine, reducing the cross section of the wire (13) by a reduction of about 8% to about 20% at each of the plurality of standard dies (14), and reducing the cross section of the wire by a reduction of about 15% to about 25% at the final die (15). The final die (15) is located on the interface between the cooling lubricant (11c) and the air. The relatively higher wire reduction at the final die (15), together with the intentionally reduced cooling, results in a higher yield strength steel wire (13) with higher Rp0.2/Rm ratio and lower internal residual stress.</p> |
