A parallel conductor transmission line comprising two concave conductor plates 3a, 3b encloses a railway track 2, carrying a vehicle 1 and is used both for propogating a communication wave 13 between a vehicle borne communication device 4 and antenna 7 and a fixed communication station 8, and for propogating a radar wave 10 and echo wave 12 between a radar device 5 and antenna 7 and an obstacle 11. To stop the station 8 picking up the powerful radar wave, the radar wave is transmitted in a TE no mode and the communication wave is transmitted in a TM no mode. If the communication wave is too rapidly attenuated, station 8 may be replaced by a repeater station. Alternatively to remove said attenuation, the communication wave may be coupled into a low-loss transmission line 24, Fig. 2 (not shown), running parallel with the conductor plates by means of slot coupling waveguides 25 placed at intervals along the line. The antenna 6 may comprise, Fig. 6 (not shown), a slotted waveguide primary radiation and a parabolic reflector. When the low-loss transmission lines 24 are used, propogation of the communication wave by the conductor plates 3a, 3b may be attenuated by facing them with a mode filter 28, Fig. 13 (not shown), comprising a plurality of vertical closely spaced conducting wires 28.
