<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation of display quality without increasing thickness. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal display panel 10 having an upper glass substrate 12 and a lower glass substrate 14 for sandwiching liquid crystal therebetween; and a backlight 22 for emitting light in a planar shape to the liquid crystal display panel 10 from the lower glass substrate 14 side. The upper glass substrate 12 and the lower glass substrate 14 respectively have: upper surfaces 34u and 34d turning to the opposite side to the back light 22; lower surfaces 36u and 36d turning to the backlight 22; and peripheral end surfaces 38u and 38d connecting the upper surfaces 34u and 34d and the lower surfaces 36u and 36d. The peripheral end surfaces 38u and 38d of the upper glass substrate 12 and the lower glass substrate 14 include forward tapered end surfaces 40u and 40d tilting to a slanting upper side, by outwardly projecting the lower surfaces 36u and 36d than the upper surfaces 34u and 34d.
