A method of fusion cutting a metal workpiece, particularly of steel or steel alloys, comprises first partially cutting through the workpiece by a plasma jet and then completing the cut by oxygen/gas flame cutting. The plasma jet and torches may be combined in a single unit with the plasma jet inclined at an angle of 20-30 degrees to facilitate removal of molten metal. An adjuvant powder may be used during the flame cutting. Nitrogen and hydrogen are used for the plasma jet; oxygen and acetylene or propane are used for the flame cutting. A compressed air jet is used to remove slag. Specific examples are given for cutting carbon steel and chromium-nickel steel. |
