This liquid crystal display (100) is equipped with: a vertically aligned liquid crystal layer (30); a first and a second substrate (10, 20); a first and a second electrode (11, 21) provided to the liquid crystal layer side of each of the first and second substrates; and a pair of optical alignment films (12, 22). Each pixel region has: a first liquid crystal domain in which the reference alignment direction determined by the pair of optical alignment films is a first direction; and a second liquid crystal domain in which the reference alignment direction is a second direction different to the first direction. The first electrode has slit formation regions (11R1) in which slits (11s) extending in a direction roughly parallel to the reference alignment direction are formed in parts of the regions corresponding to the first and second liquid crystal domains. The width (W) of the slits is set such that the practical reduction in applied voltage is at least 0.5V when the highest gradation voltage is supplied to the first electrode, and the displacement with respect to the reference alignment direction of the alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules (30a) is less than 45°. |
