Provided is a hybrid construction machine ensuring the operability of a composite operation regardless of the variation of the load of a working machine and also provided is a method for controlling the hybrid construction machine. The hybrid construction machine has: a swiveling body; a working machine installed on the swiveling body; an engine mounted on the swiveling body; a first electric motor driven by the engine and capable of generating power; a hydraulic pump driven by the engine and the first electric motor; a second electric motor for driving the swiveling body; and a plurality of electricity storage devices. The hybrid construction machine is equipped with a first control unit that, when the working machine and the swiveling body are operated in a composite manner, drives and controls the second electric motor by the power supplied from at least one electricity storage device selected from the plurality of electricity storage devices and another electricity storage device having a higher output per unit weight than the selected at least one electricity storage device and a low storage energy and drives and controls a hydraulic pump by the engine.
