A process for preparing a poromeric material comprises placing a non-woven interlayer fabric of randomly disposed synthetic fibres on a porous fibrous substrate, coating the interlayer with a polymer dispersion, the dispersion penetrating the interlayer fabric and at least a part of the thickness of the substrate, coagulating the polymer and drying the coated structure to form a laminate in which the dispersion after coagulation bonds the interlayer fabric to the substrate and forms a smooth poromeric coating on the exterior surface of the interlayer fabric sufficiently thick to render the surface pattern of interlayer fabric invisible to the naked eye but less than 30 mils thick, said interlayer fabric having the following characteristics: thickness 2.6 mils., break elongation 10-40% Î 20-60%, modulus 250-600 Î 100-400 p.s.i. at 5% elongation, tensile strength 1-6 Î 0À7-4 p.s.i., smoothness factor less than 10 mils. The specified interlayer fabric is made from polyethylene terephthalate and ethylene terephthalate/ethylene isophthalate copolymer; the specified substrate is a non-woven mat of polyethylene tere-- phthalate fibres.</p> |
