Described is a method for controlling the pollution of wastewaters using a built microbial mat and/or a bioreactor packaged with the built microbial mat and/or the hybrid system containing the bioreactor. Moreover, the system has the property to remove levels, of from about 90% to about 100%, of coliform bacteria from wastewater effluents, removing high amounts, of from about 90% to about 100%, of ammonium, simultaneously producing and removing nitrite and nitrate (from about 30% to about 90%) as well as heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, Zn and Mn in an efficient manner. The method may be used in situ or ex situ. The built microbial mat is formed by microbial consortia resulting from wastewater effluents of coastal municipalities. Those consortia may be microalgae species, nitrite-oxidant bacteria species and ammonia-oxidant bacteria and the possible combination of the same. The built microbial mat may comprise the strain of Nitrobacter alkalicus with the SEQ. ID. No. 1 and the strain Nitr osomonas europaea with the SEQ. ID. NO. 2. This mat has the property of bioremediating nutrients and/or coliforms and/or heavy metals in the wastewater effluents, with saline influence, in the same manner as being packed in a bioreactor connected to polyethersulfone membranes and forming a hybrid system.
