In order to wind a stator coil on a bobbin in different configurations, the coil is wound as a plurality of layers23a,23b,23c, each layer comprising a plurality of turns that extend between opposite ends of the bobbin. The outermost layer 23b has a turn pitch greater than that of a lower layer 23a. Alternatively the outermost layer 23c and the adjacent layer 23b may have less turns than a layer 23a. The arrangement allows the first and last turn of the winding to begin and end at the same end of the bobbin. The crisscross pattern made by the turns 23c, 23b allows the coils to be maintained under tension and the turns of these layer may lie side by side (fig 3 not shown). The since the outermost turns extend between opposite end of the bobbin, the arrangement also reduces flux leakage
|
