A sample plate 1 for an ion source is disclosed comprising a plurality of ionization regions each having first and second electrodes 4 separated by an insulator 4a, a DC or AC voltage being applied therebetween. Droplets 3 of, for example, liquid matrix are deposited on the sample support so as to extend between said first and second electrodes, an electrical pathway being thereby provided via said droplets. Upon desorption by a laser 5 or, alternatively, by using sonic, electrical, spark, or mechanical energy, the droplets of charged liquid retain a high charge imbalance, and preferably then collide with an energy imparting device such as the heated vacuum inlet tube 6 of a mass spectrometer 7. The evaporation/shearing/desolvation of droplets within the transfer tube 6 increases the generation of multiply charged ions. The sample plate may also be used in the field of MS-imaging.
|
