<p>A polyurethane foam article has a hydrophobic polyurethane foam layer and a hydrophilic or haemophilic polyurethane foam layer, at least one of the layers containing barium sulphate. It is particularly useful in forming a swab which has sufficient radio-opacity to produce a visibly distinct shadow on an X-ray image. Preferably, the barium sulphate is in the hydrophobic layer. Methods of forming the article are provided, comprising disposing a non-polymerised hydrophobic layer containing barium sulphate over a hydrophilic layer, and polymerising the hydrophobic layer. Alternatively, the article may have a hydrophobic polyurethane foam layer and a hydrophilic or haemophilic polyurethane foam layer, the article having at least one cavity therein, the or each cavity having at least one vent extending to the exterior of the article and containing an analgesic fluid, and a method of forming the same including disposing a non-polymerised hydrophobic layer over a hydrophilic layer, polymerising the hydrophobic layer, forming at least one cavity with a vent to the exterior and inserting an analgesic fluid. The polyurethane may contain polyol and isocyanate.</p> |
