A sawing jig for cutting building panels of major size to shape and for cutting rectangular openings in the same comprises an upright frame 10 having a horizontal frame member 13 provided with carriers 16 for supporting the panel to be cut, a roller carriage 17 guided along an upper horizontal frame member, a guide beam 18 extending vertically downwards from the carriage, a slide 19 on the guide beam provided with locating means and carrying a deflectably mounted circular saw 20 which is also tiltable from a position for making vertical cuts to a position for making a horizontal cut, and support means on the front face of the frame for supporting a panel resting on the carriers comprising an elevationally movable trellis which has horizontal battens 24 and is positively raisable in the plane of the trellis by motion transmitting means 31 operably by inward deflection of the saw for making horizontal cuts whenever the blade of the saw is in elevational alignment with a batten of the trellis and could damage the same when making the cut. The circular saw is tiltable by a handle 22 between the positions for making the horizontal and vertical cuts and is clampable in position on the slide 19 by a locking lever 21. In the position for making horizontal cuts, the blade 20a of the saw is laterally slightly offset from the panel surface and the saw is deflectable inwards by a handle 23. When making horizontal cuts the guide beam 18, which extends from the roller carriage 17 and is supported by the lower rail 13, is movable transversely of the frame 10, and for vertical cuts, the slide 19 movable vertically in the guide beam which is locked in predetermined positions in which the saw blade is aligned with vertical slots in the horizontal battens so as not to damage the battens. The top member of the trellis consists of an inverted U-section rail 26, one flange of which is engaged by a roller 27 on an arm 28a extending from a lifting bar guided for movement in a rail 29 secured to the beam. The bar is provided with pairs of projections 30, the projection of each pair being spaced a distance corresponding to the spacing of the flanges of the battens and the spacing of the pairs of projections being equal to the spacing of the battens. A quadrant 32 is pivotally mounted on the slide 19 and has a recess receiving one end of a lifting finger 31 which is normally disposed in an inoperative position and held on the quadrant by a retainer. When the saw 20 is deflected by the handle 23 for effecting horizontal cuts, a bulbous projection 38 on the saw casing engages and rocks the quadrant to urge the finger 31 against the lifting bar. If the blade of the saw is in an elevational position in which it would engage and damage a batten 24 of the trellis, the finger 31 engages a projection 30 to raise the bar 28 and hence, by means of the roller 27 and rail 26, raise the trellis so that the batten is moved from the path of the saw blade.</p> |
