<PICT:1061127/C1/1> One of the pinching jaws used to pinch-seal the lamp envelope and simultaneously to seal-in the leading-in wire or wires is provided with a transverse metal blade to stop the flow of softened glass towards the end of the lamp. For producing a stem press rectangular cross-section, the jaws 4, 5 have lateral extensions 8, 9. The jaw 4 carries a blade 12 with a slot 13 having a funnel-shaped opening 14 to receive the leading-in wire 2. To produce a stem press of I-shaped cross-section, two pairs of jaws moving at right-angles may be used, one pair of which is first brought into contact with the softened glass 3 of the stem. The glass 3, which may be quartz, is then pressed by the second pair of jaws which are similar to the jaws 4, 5 but without the lateral extensions and one of which carries the slotted blade. The jaws are of brass and the blade of stainless steel. |
