<p>An ion analytical device comprises a separator 2 for separating ions according to a physico-chemical property (e.g. mobility or mass-to-charge ratio), an interface 3 (e.g. ion guide) and a quadrupole rod set mass filter 4 arranged downstream of the interface 3. A first group of ions emerging from the separator 2 is transmitted through the interface 3 with a first transit time, and a second group of ions subsequently emerging from the separator 2 is transmitted with a second different transit time. The transit time through the interface 3 may be altered during a single cycle of operation. The second group of ions may be delayed so that they arrive at the mass filter 4 only after the mass filter 4 has sufficient time to switch to transmitting a corresponding mass-to-charge ratio for these ions. The invention may allow a relatively fast ion mobility spectrometer to be coupled to a relative slow quadrupole mass filter.</p> |
