The positive and negative electrode plates of an electrochemical cell have active masses comprising silver or silver compounds and cadmium or cadmium compounds, preferably in the proportions of 70-90% silver, 30-10% cadmium, and 90-98% cadmium, 10-2% silver respectively. The electrodes may be manufactured by blending and compacting comminuted component powders of between 1-8 microns in size, and sintering for ¢ to 20 minutes, this time varying inversely with temperature. Alternatively, cadmium oxide may be incorporated into pre-shaped silver electrodes by impregnating them under partial vacuum, by contact with a concentrated solution of cadmium salts such as the sulphate, nitrate, chloride acetate or organic or inorganic compounds soluble in water. The coated electrode so formed is treated in a warm solution of an alkali metal hydroxide such as sodium or potassium hydroxide of 25-45% concentration. Excess water and cadmium hydroxide is removed from the electrode which may be dried at 95‹ to 105‹ C. until constant weight is achieved. A battery comprises a casing 2, a plurality of positive and negative electrodes 11, 12 manufactured as above, and layers of porous and/or semi-permeable separating layers 13. The assembly 11-13 is permeated by an alkaline electrolyte 17 such as 30-50% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution which is confined by the separators 13 in positive and negative electrolyte compartments.
