The fishing adaptor includes a drill bit connector 2b to enable the adapter to be demountably attached to a drill bit 1. An item connector 2a enables a cable C or other elongate / linear item to be attached to the adapter. The drill bit connector includes a hook that is formed in situ from a wire element that is mounted in the fishing adaptor body. Another embodiment of fishing adaptor includes a body (4a, Figure 7B) adapted to grip a pipe P or conduit by splaying when prised apart by a wedge 4d pulled by a hook (4b, Figure 7A). The adapter may further have a rotary coupling 2d between the drill bit connector and the item connector to permit the drill bit to rotate as the adapter with cable or elongate / linear item attached is pulled through a drilled hole without significantly twisting the cable or elongate / linear item. An alternative embodiment includes a drill bit with an elliptical, rectangular or elongate hole near to a tip end of the bit for securing a hook on an adapter to the drill bit.
